Navigating the Eviction Process

Booklet Guide for Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC)

Brief

Redesign existing packet that explains the eviction process to people who are being evicted by their landlord.

Must be written in plain, easy to understand language and must be designed using LSNC’s brand guidelines for color and typography.

Existing guide

The Unlawful Detainer (Eviction) Your Day in Court packet was written by lawyers at LSNC to give to clients as a way to reinforce the legal advice they have already given.

The information was useful, but not organized in a meaningful way. This realization determined my core mission: to make the packet meaningful and easy to understand through robust information hierarchy.

Redesign

Navigating The Eviction Process is an accessible and digestible guide to representing oneself in Unlawful Detainer (eviction) court. It provides not only information on how the court proceedings will work and how to prepare, but also options for settling outside of court and interactive checklists to help make the process smoother.

Process

Throughout my process in redesigning this packet I interviewed my expert at Legal Services to get feedback on my updated framework for presenting information.

I diverged quite a bit from the existing structure of the document and rewrote the content in a more friendly, approachable way.
